Bombers bits

• Catcher Brian McCann was not in Friday's lineup, a scheduled day off with the Yankees and Red Sox set to play a 1:05 p.m. ET contest on Saturday. Outfielder Brett Gardner also received a day off.

David Phelps and Vidal Nuno were likely unavailable to pitch on Friday, according Girardi. Phelps threw 2 1/3 innings for his first career save on Thursday, and Nuno was used for 3 1/3 innings of long relief on Tuesday against the Orioles.

• Teixeira turned 34 on Friday.

• On this date in 1912, the Yankees donned pinstripes for the first time, wearing them for their home opener at Hilltop Park in Manhattan. The Yankees lost, 5-3, to Boston; they would abandon the pinstripes in '13 and '14, but bring them back for good in '15.
