Bombers bits

Brian Roberts was out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Friday, one night after going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Girardi said that he had not planned to play Roberts four days on artificial turf, so the manager decided to rest Roberts because he had run a lot on Thursday.

• The Yankees are leaning toward giving left-hander Vidal Nuno a spot start on Sunday. They need a starting pitcher because of Tuesday's rainout against the Cubs, which set up a day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. Nuno could give the Yanks 75 pitches, Girardi said.

• Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka will see the Red Sox for the first time next week. Girardi said that Tanaka, Michael Pineda and CC Sabathia are his scheduled starters for the series at Fenway Park, which kicks off on Tuesday.

• On this date in 1923, the first game was played at Yankee Stadium as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 4-1. Bob Shawkey recorded the win and Babe Ruth hit the first home run, a three-run shot in the third inning.
