Bombers bits

• As a nod to Earth Day, which is being celebrated on Tuesday, the Yankees said that they will be giving away herb seed packets to the first 18,000 fans in attendance for Friday's game against the Angels at Yankee Stadium.

• By promoting Vidal Nuno to the fifth-starter's role and outrighting Cesar Cabral to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees have gone from having three left-handers in the bullpen to just one: veteran Matt Thornton.

"It's not exactly what you want, but that's what it is," Girardi said. "We'll figure it out. We have confidence in our right-handers."

• On this date in 1959, Whitey Ford pitched a 1-0, 14-inning shutout against the Senators at Griffith Stadium, allowing seven hits with seven walks and 15 strikeouts. Moose Skowron hit a 14th-inning homer off Chuck Stobbs to provide the margin of victory.
