Mills to work out for A's, will likely start Saturday

OAKLAND -- Newly acquired lefty Brad Mills will join the A's for a workout at the Coliseum on Thursday, giving them 24 hours to decide whether to add him to their active roster.

The very chance of that happening seems likely, since manager Bob Melvin has strongly suggested it will be Mills making Saturday's start against the Red Sox in place of Drew Pomeranz, who was forced to the disabled list with a broken right hand after punching a wooden chair this week.

Nothing is official, though.

"I haven't decided anything yet," Melvin said Wednesday morning.

Triple-A right-handers Dan Straily and Arnold Leon are also under consideration, but Mills appears to have the edge.

The 29-year-old soft-tosser, acquired by the Brewers on Tuesday, went 4-2 with a 1.56 ERA in 14 appearances (12 starts) at Triple-A Nashville, including one stretch of 18 1/3 scoreless innings.
