Braves Agree to Terms with Right-Handed Pitcher Nick Masset

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Atlanta Braves have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Nick Masset on a Major League contract for the 2015 season. The Braves optioned right-handed pitcher Cody Martin to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Braves designated right-handed pitcher John Cornely for assignment.

Masset, 33, appeared in eight games with the Marlins this season and compiled a 1.86 ERA (2 ER/9.2 IP) while fanning six batters and walking just one. He signed with the Marlins as a minor-league free agent on April 6 and had his contract purchased on April 21. He cleared waivers on May 18 and elected free agency.

A veteran of eight Major League seasons, Masset has pitched to an 18-14 record with a 3.97 ERA (171 ER/387.2 IP) over 367 career appearances, including two starts. He logged a career-best 82 games and two saves in 2010 with Cincinnati, compiling a 3.40 ERA in 76.2 innings.

Masset missed the 2012 and 2013 seasons due to a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder. He returned to the majors in 2014 with Colorado and went 2-0 with a 5.80 ERA (29 ER/45.0 IP) in 51 games.

He won a career-high five games (5-1) with Cincinnati in 2009 while posting to a 2.37 ERA (20 ER/76.0 IP)

A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Masset was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the 2000 June free-agent draft.

Masset will wear uniform number 51.
