Braves place Carpenter on DL with biceps strain
Righty forced to exit after making fifth appearance in six games; Beato recalled
ATLANTA -- The Braves placed reliever David Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday afternoon with a strained right biceps. Fellow right-hander Pedro Beato was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Carpenter exited Monday night's 6-1 loss to the Phillies due to discomfort in his biceps. Assistant trainer Jim Lovell escorted Carpenter off the field after he gave up a Domonic Brown single to lead off the top of the 12th inning. It was Carpenter's second inning of work after he surrendered a hit and issued a walk in a scoreless 20-pitch 11th.
Monday's contest was the fifth in six games featuring an appearance by the right-hander.
"I don't think, if anything, it's [anything] major," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said following Monday's game. "Maybe it's just a situation where I think he's gone -- a bunch of them have gone -- three in a row or four out of five days, six out of eight days."
A long-term absence for Carpenter could spell trouble for the Atlanta bullpen, which struggled to replace right-hander Jordan Walden while he was sidelined with a left hamstring strain from May 5 to June 10.
Lovell and Gonzalez came out to the mound to check on the reliever following his fifth pitch in the 12th, a 2-2 fastball that Brown hit into center field.
Right-hander Anthony Varvaro entered the game in relief of Carpenter and stranded Brown by retiring all three batters he faced.
Beato has given up one hit in 1 2/3 innings out of the Braves' bullpen this season.
