Henderson to start rehab stint for shoulder

Right-hander opened season on DL after 2014 surgery

PITTSBURGH -- Brewers reliever Jim Henderson began a Minor League rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Brevard County on Friday night.

Henderson started for the Manatees and pitched a scoreless, hitless inning. He walked the Dunedin Blue Jays' leadoff hitter, Roemon Fields, who went on to steal second and third. Henderson struck out two of his final three batters.

Henderson opened the season on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation after undergoing shoulder surgery last August.

The right-hander worked through some discomfort in Spring Training while attempting to regain his velocity. He pitched in Minor League games this spring and continued his rehab in extended Spring Training.

In 11 1/3 innings over 14 appearances last season, Henderson went 2-1 with a 7.15 ERA.

Around the horn

• Brewers manager Ron Roenicke scrambled to change his lineup before Friday's game. The Pirates had always planned to start right-hander Vance Worley, but the club publicly listed left-hander Jeff Locke as Friday's probable starter.

As a result, Roenicke told some players Thursday that they would be out of the lineup for Friday's series opener at PNC Park. That changed when the Brewers found out Friday afternoon they'd be facing Worley a few hours later.

• Roenicke admitted the Brewers have thought about switching up their lineup given their offensive struggles, but they haven't pulled the trigger on such a move yet.

"The guys we have out on the field are the guys who are going to have to play well for us. We've made that decision; we think they're good starters and that's why they're there," he said. "The guys that come up, when they give you a spark, it's great. But I don't think you make too many changes in saying, 'Well, this guy is hot and we're just going to sit the starter.' It's hard to do that.

"It may get them in the lineup a little more often, but we kind of have a plan with everybody and what they need."
