Roenicke considering options for Cubs doubleheader

DENVER -- The Brewers were still unsure Sunday whether they would promote a pitcher or a hitter for Tuesday's doubleheader at Wrigley Field. Major League rules allow clubs to add a 26th man for scheduled doubleheaders.

The decision might not be finalized until after Monday's series opener against the Cubs, because it hinges on the condition of the Brewers' bullpen. Yovani Gallardo will start Game 1 of the twinbill, and right-hander Tyler Thornburg will probably start Game 2 unless he is needed in relief before then.

The Brewers already have one extra arm in the bullpen, leaving manager Ron Roenicke's bench a player short.

"With a four-man bench going into a double-dip, that's not ideal," Roenicke said.

Also under discussion is the condition of some of the team's regulars. Shortstop Jean Segura sat out Sunday's finale in Denver because of a tight right forearm, and Roenicke hinted that Segura could get another game off during the Cubs series. Center fielder Carlos Gomez has been dealing with his own bumps and bruises to both hands and his left shoulder. But he reported to Roenicke on Sunday morning that he is feeling strong, and may be among the regulars who play both games on Tuesday.

Gomez had emerged from a long slump to go 10-for-16 in his last four games entering Sunday.
