Brock Holt, Brayan Villarreal, and Steven Wright recalled

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled infielder Brock Holt and right-handers Brayan Villarreal and Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket. They will be active for tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

For Holt, 25, this marks his third stint with the Red Sox in 2013. He has hit .203 (12-for-59) with two doubles, 11 RBI, eight runs, and one stolen base in 23 games for Boston this season. Defensively, he has played in 20 games at third base (17 starts), and also appeared in three games at second base. In 83 regular season contests for Pawtucket this year, he hit .258 (75-for-291) with six doubles, three home runs, and 24 RBI, and appeared at second base (44 games), shortstop (32 games), and third base (7 games). He also led the PawSox with five RBI and 35 at-bats in the International League playoffs. The left-handed hitter has 47 games of major league experience between the Pittsburgh Pirates (2012) and Red Sox (2013).

The 26-year-old Villarreal made one appearance for the Red Sox in his first stint with the club from August 22-24, walking the only batter he faced on August 20 against the Giants in San Francisco. Acquired from the Detroit Tigers as part of a three-team, seven-player deal on July 30, he posted a 1.13 ERA (1 ER/8.0 IP) in nine combined outings for Pawtucket between the regular season and playoffs. In 39 overall minor league outings, including 28 for Detroit's Triple-A Toledo, two rehab games for Short-A Lowell, and the International League playoffs, Villarreal went 2-3 with two saves, a 2.60 ERA (13 ER/45.0 IP), and 50 strikeouts with no home runs allowed. He also appeared in seven games for Detroit this season, going 0-2 while allowing 10 runs in 4.1 innings. In 74 career big league appearances, all in relief with the Tigers (2011-13) and Red Sox (2013), he has fanned 86 batters in 75.0 innings.

Wright, 28, has made four appearances in three stints with the Red Sox this year in his first career major league action. With Boston, he is 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA (8 ER/13.1 IP), 10 strikeouts, nine walks, and a .245 opponent batting average (12-for-49). The knuckleball pitcher spent the majority of the 2013 season with Pawtucket, where he went 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA (52 ER/135.1 IP), 65 walks, and 99 strikeouts in 24 regular season starts. He also went 1-1 in two starts for the PawSox in the playoffs, allowing no earned runs (2 unearned runs) with a team-high 11 strikeouts and 13 innings pitched in the postseason.

With today's transaction, Boston's active major league roster is now at 36 players.
