This is Boscan's second tour of duty of the season with the Bucs, but he did not make an appearance when first called up in mid-May. He has been in the Indians' starting rotation all season, and obviously was needed to fill a long-relief role on Sunday if required, with both Deolis Guerra and Vance Worley having pitched multiple innings in Saturday night's 6-5, 14-inning victory over the Cardinals.
"I got two pitchers who are down," manager Clint Hurdle said of the need for Boscan, who had been scheduled to start on Sunday for the Indians. "So he can throw a hundred pitches, if need be. We didn't want to be caught a pitcher short tonight."
Hurdle also indicated that Jeff Locke, who made his last start of the first half on Thursday and won't have another turn until next weekend's start of second-half play, would be available out of the bullpen for Sunday night's game.
Boscan was 6-3 with a 3.87 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) at Indianapolis. He has allowed only two home runs all season, in 76 2/3 innings.
Lombardozzi was hitless in 10 at-bats, all as a pinch hitter.
