Posey, Susac provide punch for Giants

SAN FRANCISCO -- Finding one impact player who can don the tools of ignorance is hard enough, but the San Francisco Giants have the luxury of two. And that tandem of catchers was the difference in their 7-5 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Buster Posey, the Giants' full-time catcher moonlighting at first base, knocked in two runs with a double in the third inning to tie the score, and backup backstop Andrew Susac delivered a game-winning three-run double in the seventh to complete the Giants' comeback against the Rockies at AT&T Park.

Manager Bruce Bochy has made an effort to get Susac into the lineup this month and the catcher has responded well to the opportunity. Susac extended his career-long hit streak to eight games with a single in his first at-bat and added the double in his third appearance, following an intentional walk to Posey, to finish 2-for-4.

"I'm pretty confident right now," Susac said.

Susac's performance Saturday increased his batting average to .367 in June, and he has hit safely in every start he's made this month. His 30 at-bats already surpassed his total in May (28), and Bochy said to expect that trend to continue.

"I see Andrew getting increased playing time," Bochy said. "He's earned that and we need some help offensively and he provides that."

Posey, who has taken the rookie under his wing this season, has played a lot of first base since the Giants placed Nori Aoki and Hunter Pence on the disabled list. But handing the catching keys to Susac hasn't stopped the 2012 Most Valuable Player from producing at the plate.

Posey has knocked in nine runs in the last four games and is at his best when it matters most. He's hitting .297 on the season and an even better .379 with runners in scoring position and two outs. With 11 home runs and 50 RBIs, Posey is on pace for 23 long balls and 107 RBIs, the latter of which would be a career high.

"He's special," Susac said of his mentor. "I'm very blessed to be able to play with him and watch him go about his business because it only gets me better learning from him."

The Giants' catching duo of Posey and Susac has helped keep the team afloat despite being without two of its starting outfielders. It also has allowed Bochy to move Brandon Belt to left field and get the team's best bats in the lineup every day.

"It's a nice luxury," Bochy said. "With our situation, I'm talking about the injuries, it has kind of forced us a little bit."
