Call upheld in Marlins' first challenge

MIAMI -- The first instant replay challenge at Marlins Park was upheld. As with many of the early innings on Wednesday, the call did not go the Marlins' way.

In the fourth inning, Miami manager Mike Redmond challenged a force play at second base in which second-base umpire Jerry Layne ruled Jordan Pacheco safe.

The review lasted under three minutes, and the ruling on the field was upheld by replay technology.

"Both of our guys [in the video room] said they thought he was out," Redmond said. "I looked at the video, and he sure looked like he was out to me. I'm sure the explanation was inconclusive. Out of 10 times, we're going to challenge that play 10 times. It didn't go our way today, for whatever reason."

With the Rockies threatening with runners on first and second, Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez got DJ LeMahieu to bounce to second. The Marlins had a chance to get the sure force at second base, and perhaps a double play. But second baseman Derek Dietrich lost his footing fielding the ball, and his toss to second dragged shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria off the bag.

Hechavarria's foot dragged across the bag on the play, but there was not definitive proof that the shortstop's foot was on the base while he had the ball, so the safe call was upheld.

The official ruling on the play was a fielder's choice, error on Dietrich.

It was a big call, because Alvarez threw a wild pitch on his next pitch to Jordan Lyles, and Nolan Arenado scored from third.

Arenado's slide clipped Alvarez on the left leg. One batter later, Alvarez was lifted from the game in what turned out to be a three-run inning by Colorado.
