Cano out of the lineup with minor hand injury

SEATTLE -- Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was out of the lineup with a minor hand injury for Friday's series opener against the Tigers after he was a late scratch (sick) prior to Thursday's 7-5 loss to the Angels.

"Robbie's still not feeling well and he also has a minor hand contusion," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I'm just going to leave him out. He's going to be day to day. He's not going to be in the lineup today. We'll see how he's feeling tomorrow."

Cano, who the Mariners signed to a 10-year, $240 million contract last offseason, played in Seattle's first 52 games before sitting out Thursday. Cano isn't expected to miss more than a few games.

"I feel better than I felt yesterday," he said to a team spokesman.

Cano wasn't available to speak directly with the media prior to Friday's first pitch because he was getting treatment, but McClendon intimated that his No. 3 hitter's hand injury came from swinging a bat.

"It's nothing serious. He has a little soreness in the muscle area," McClendon said.

Entering Friday, Cano had played in 1,172 out of a possible 1,187 games since 2007, most in the Major Leagues during that span.

The first 20,000 fans to Saturday's game receive a Cano bobblehead.

Cano is tied for second in the American League with a .327 batting average and 22 multi-hit games. He has two home runs, 11 doubles and 31 RBIs for the season.
