Cards prospect Reyes has sore right shoulder

Right-hander's status uncertain for SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game

ST. LOUIS -- Alex Reyes, who was recently named to the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game world roster, may not be able to participate in the prospect showcase event due to right shoulder soreness, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak acknowledged on Friday.

Reyes, the 20-year-old right-hander ranked as the Cardinals' No. 3 prospect by MLBPipeline.com, was recently placed on the Class A Advanced Palm Beach disabled list. Mozeliak said that Reyes will likely miss at least two starts due to the injury, though an MRI showed no reason for long-term concern.

Mozeliak noted that the organization hasn't yet ruled out Reyes' participation in the July 12 Futures game, but would alert the Commissioner's Office next week if it looks unlikely that Reyes will be ready by that date. In that case, the Cards could have another Minor League player added to the roster.

In 12 starts with Palm Beach, Reyes has posted a 2.08 ERA and struck out 90 over 60 2/3 innings.

"Electric stuff," Mozeliak said. "You can see why he's rising up the prospect chart. He's really amazing. Obviously, we've considered a promotion. I think the big thing for him is just sort of understanding pitch efficiency. When you're seeing somebody with that type of stuff, but yet you're at 100 pitches in the fourth inning or fifth inning, that's something you've got to make adjustments on, especially as you go higher and hitters become better.

"I feel like what he's accomplished is impressive, but there are still some things he could do better before he takes that next step."

Other items of note from around the Cardinals' Minor League system

• Rehabbing starter Marco Gonzales (left shoulder impingement) recently began his throwing program at the Cardinals' complex in Florida. Mozeliak said the organization will wait about another week before determining if the left-hander is ready to start pitching for an affiliate. Mozeliak added that Gonzales "felt good" while throwing on Friday.

Gonzales' last start came with Triple-A Memphis on May 19.

• Though the Cardinals don't currently need any outfield help at the Major League level, they have a pair of Triple-A outfielders trying to push their way into the conversation. In 15 games since coming off the DL, Tommy Pham has hit .339 with 16 RBIs. Nine of his 19 hits have been for extra bases.

Stephen Piscotty, the team's top-ranked position prospect per MLB Pipeline, has hit safely in 23 of his last 28 games. Piscotty is moving around to play all three outfield positions and is getting some pregame work at first base. There are no imminent plans to play him at first base in a game.

"We'll be patient with that one," Mozeliak said.

• Looking ahead to the team's next road trip, the Cardinals plan to call up a starter to pitch one of the July 7 games in a doubleheader against the Cubs. Lefty Tyler Lyons, who was recently optioned out after winning two starts for the Cardinals, is in line to be that extra pitcher.
