Cardinals draft 11 players through first 10 rounds

ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 7, 2013 - The St. Louis Cardinals selected seven pitchers, and four infielders after two days of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.   The breakdown of the first 11 picks has the Cardinals drafting six college and five high school players overall.  

One of the players is still playing in the Super Regional round of the College World Series, two of the players reside in Florida with one Missouri native and a Canadian who signed with the University of Missouri.

Mike Mayers, the Cardinals third round pick out of the University of Mississippi was 5-6 with a 2.83 ERA this season for the Rebels. Pitched the opening game of the 2013 Raleigh NCAA Regional and was SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on May 13^th. Had career marks of 12-9 with a 3.42 ERA over 215 innings with 171 strikeouts over three seasons at Ole Miss.

Mason Katz, the Cardinals fourth round pick out of Louisiana State University helped lead the Tigers to the 2013 Southeastern Conference Championship and are currently in the NCAA Super Regional round. Katz currently leads the SEC in home runs (15), RBI (68), slugging percentage (.652), while batting .378, to rank third in the SEC. Katz, was drafted as a second baseman after playing first base for LSU this season. He was first-team SEC All-Conference and a two-time National and SEC Player of the Week in 2013.

Ian McKinney, the Cardinals fifth round selection out of Boone High School in Orlando, Fla., posted a 7-1 record with a 1.25 ERA over 59 innings with 66 strikeouts. He was named to the Orlando Sentinel All-Central Florida team and has signed with the University of Central Florida.

Jimmy Reed, the Cardinals sixth round pick out of the University of Maryland became the fourth left-handed pitcher drafted by the Cardinals. The southpaw from Gaithersburg, Md., was previously drafted by the New York Yankees in the 21^st round in 2012 but did not sign. The first back-to-back winner of ACC Pitcher of the Week in Maryland Baseball history, was 6-4 with a 2.33 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 88.2 innings over 13 starts, as the Friday night starter of the Terrapins staff.   His 2.33 ERA currently ranks eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. His father Jim played basketball at Georgia State University.

Chris Rivera, the Cardinals seventh round pick out of El Dorado High School, was a two-way player drafted as a shortstop. Has a live arm clocked as high as 97 MPH when on the mound. Was the first 14-year old selected to play for the 16-and-under U.S. National Team. He batted .273 with four home runs and 21 stolen bases while posting a 1.90 ERA on the mound his senior season.

Andrew Pierce, the Cardinals eighth round pick out of the University of Southern Mississippi was a two-time first team All-Conference USA selection and the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in 2012. In two seasons, Pierce posted a 16-6 record with a 2.30 ERA in 211.1 innings with 194 strikeouts and six complete games. He ranked fourth in the conference with 98 strikeouts this season.

Nick Petree, the Cardinals ninth round selection out of Missouri State University, became the Cardinals first in-state selection. Petree was the first three-time All-American in Missouri State's program. Named the 2012 Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger National Player of the Year and a first team All-American by Baseball America, Petree compiled a career 27-7 record with a miniscule 1.76 ERA covering 41 starts (46 appearances) over 311.1 innings and 306 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .218 batting average.

Malik Collymore (pronounced mah-LEEK), the Cardinals 10^th round selection and final pick in Day 2 of the draft out of Port Credit Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, is a middle infielder clocked at 6.54 seconds in the 60 yard dash and was the Canada representative for the Power Showcase Home Run Derby. He has signed with the University of Missouri.
