Gomez rests knee after spectacular catch

SAN FRANCISCO -- Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez is dealing with a swollen and sore right knee after banging it into the wall while making a tremendous catch in the first inning of Tuesday's loss to the Giants. He was out of the starting lineup Wednesday for the first time since the Astros acquired him via trade.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he wanted to play it cautious with Gomez's knee, which was sore. Gomez had started 11 consecutive games in center field since being traded from the Brewers on July 30, and he entered Wednesday hitting .239 with one homer and four RBIs with Houston.

Gomez pinch-hit in the seventh inning Wednesday, flying out to right with two runners on base.

"It's not considered significant but enough to where we'd like to get him a day off, or at least a start off," Hinch said. "We have an off-day [Thursday] and then should be good to go on Friday."

Gomez, who won a Gold Glove in 2013 with the Brewers, made a long run to straightaway center and leapt at the wall, crashing face-first into the padding as he caught the ball. Gomez gestured and yelled in exhilaration after catching the ball.

Overall this season, Gomez entered Wednesday hitting .259 with nine homers and 47 RBIs and earlier this year slugged his 100th career homer.
