CarGo: Hand sprain 'nothing major'

Rockies OF out of lineup for second straight game

DENVER -- On Wednesday, Carlos Gonzalez took his first swings since leaving Sunday's game with what's been classified as a sprained left hand. Gonzalez said he swung off the tee, hit a couple soft tosses and took live batting practice in the cage.

"It's sore, of course, because it was a little sprain, but the more I get treatment, the more I get better," said Gonzalez, who wasn't in the starting lineup for the second straight day. "Hopefully, in the next few days, it'll start getting better and better until it's gone. I hope it's not a DL thing. I don't think it should be a problem because I swung the bat."

Gonzalez said he was planning to take some additional cuts during on-field batting practice in hopes of preparing for a possible late-game appearance on Wednesday. Rain, however, cut Colorado's BP short. But Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Gonzalez could see action in some capacity anyways.

"I think he'd be in play [on Wednesday]," Weiss said.

Gonzalez didn't play in the Rockies' 10-5 win over Arizona on Tuesday, but he still used the time productively.

"I spent almost the entire game inside doing the things I was supposed to," Gonzalez said. "And hopefully, I can get back on the field soon, and I don't have to deal with this anytime soon.

"I've got to continue to do treatment, and hopefully, it gets better. [Head athletic trainer Keith Dugger] and everybody are doing a great job so far. This is nothing major."

Worth noting

• The Rockies and fourth-round Draft pick David Hill agreed to bonus terms worth $550,000, according to MLB.com's Draft and Signing Bonus Tracker. A right-hander from the University of San Diego, Hill went 9-3 with a 2.33 ERA in 14 starts. He struck out 115 and walked just 35 in 100 1/3 innings.
