Carolina RHP Joe Colon wins Player of the Week honors

The Cleveland Indians today announced Single-A Carolina RHP JOE COLON has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week for August 19-26.

Colon, 23, took the mound for the Mudcats on Thursday, August 22 and guided Carolina to an 8-2 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats. Colon twirled a season-high 7.0 scoreless innings, while striking out 5 and walking none. Opposing batters were just 4-for-24 at the plate off the right-hander and recorded just two at bats with runners in scoring position.

Over the course of his last 3 starts, the Caguas, Puerto Rico native has surrendered just 2 earned runs through 20.1 innings, while averaging 6.6 strikeouts per nine IP. He has not shouldered a loss since July 20 and is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 6 starts over that span. His 1.88 ERA is second-best in the Carolina League during that stretch. In 13 starts for Carolina this season, Colon is 4-3 with a 2.99 ERA (24/72.1 IP) with 62 strikeouts and just 21 walks.

The 6-1", 204 pound right-hander was originally selected by the Indians in the 12th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Colon posted a 3.43 ERA in 22 starts between Lake County and Carolina last season, the 6th lowest ERA in the Indians Player Development System.
