Catcher led league in batting avg., HR, slugging, on-base-pct.

HOUSTON -- Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that Astros catcher Jason Castro has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of May 20-26.

For the week, Castro hit .579 (11x19) with three home runs and five RBI with a .636 on-base-pct. and a 1.105 slugging pct. Castro led the AL in batting average, home runs, OBP, and SLG. The hot-hitting catcher has been on a tear as of late. Entering today, he was 11x15 (.733) in his last five games.

Castro is the first Astros player to win the Player of the Week award since Hunter Pence won the NL Player of the Week award in 2010 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5), and the first catcher to win it since Craig Biggio won the NL award in April of 1990.

The 25-year-old Castro, who was the Astros first pick in the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft, is hitting .284 on the season with 13 doubles, six homers and 15 RBI. Among AL catchers, he ranks first in doubles, third in batting average and homers and T-3rd in slugging pct.

In recognition of his American League Player of the Week Award, Jason Castro will be awarded an engraved watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
