Hundley has eventful first start with Orioles

MILWAUKEE -- Nick Hundley, acquired over the weekend from San Diego, made his first start for the Orioles in Monday's series opener against the Brewers.

It turned out to be an eventful afternoon, as Hundley delivered the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Orioles won, 7-6. Hundley, who went 1-for-5, also made a throwing error in the ninth that allowed the Brewers to put runners at second and third with one out, after the Orioles had rallied for two runs to tie in the top half. But the Orioles got a double play to end the inning, setting up Hundley's game-winning hit.

"Think about the first time a guy gets traded, it's a big change in his life," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Hundley, who joined the team on Sunday after Saturday's trade that sent Troy Patton to the Padres.

"They had three good catchers [in San Diego]. Think they were the only team in baseball with that. And now us. Obviously we are going to have to make an adjustment on our roster tomorrow. But I think he knows there's an opportunity here. It's no reflection on what we think is going to happen with Matt [Wieters]. It's another testament to our ownership stepping out, because it is an addition to our payroll."

The Orioles are expected to activate Chris Davis off the paternity list on Tuesday and the club also has catchers Caleb Joseph and Steve Clevenger, with Clevenger a left-handed hitter and Joseph a righty like Hundley. There's a good chance the O's option Joseph to clear a roster spot, but Showalter said it's not impossible that the club carries three catchers during the InterLeague series, especially with Clevenger and Joseph both able to play first base, if needed.

Reliever Preston Guilmet was added in Davis' place on Sunday but doesn't necessarily have to be the guy to go, per the paternity list rules.
