Utley rests, replaced by Galvis for series opener in Cincy

CINCINNATI -- Phillies second baseman Chase Utley got a day off Monday, his first of the young season.

Freddy Galvis started for the third consecutive game. He played third base in place of Michael Young on Saturday and shortstop in place of Jimmy Rollins on Sunday.

"I figured he hasn't been off and has played 12 games," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Utley. "I said I was going to watch him, and I said I was going to pick times to sit him."

Utley, who missed the beginning of the previous two seasons because of knee injuries, entered Monday's game against the Reds at Great American Ball Park hitting .277 with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, 10 RBIs and a .532 slugging percentage.

"I've been very happy with the way he's been playing and running," Manuel said. "The way he's running around and stuff, that tells me he feels real good and is in real good shape -- that he's healthy. He feels much better."

In the seventh inning, Utley entered the game as a pinch-hitter and knocked a game-tying, two-run homer off Reds starter Bronson Arroyo.
