Sale sails through spring debut in White Sox loss

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Dodgers outfield prospect Joc Pederson slugged a two-run, opposite-field home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday, as Los Angeles beat the White Sox, 5-0.

Pederson, with a shot of making the club because of Matt Kemp's injury, homered off White Sox reliever Jake Petricka after a single by Clint Robinson. Kemp is still waiting to be cleared to run on his surgically repaired ankle.

Left-handed pitchers Chris Sale of the White Sox and Hyun-Jin Ryu turned in solid initial spring starts. Sale went 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and allowed one hit. Ryu allowed two hits in two scoreless innings.

Both bullpens were sharp as well. Sale was followed with scoreless outings from Parker Frazier, Donnie Veal, Mitchell Boggs and Charlie Leesman.

Ryu was followed by the nucleus of the expected bullpen -- Brian Wilson, Kenley Jansen, Chris Perez, J.P. Howell and Jamey Wright -- which also held the White Sox scoreless.

Robinson added a solo homer to cap a three-run L.A. eighth inning off Chicago reliever Omar Poveda.

Up next: John Danks, now one full season removed from season-ending arthroscopic shoulder surgery in 2012, will make his Cactus League debut Saturday against the Indians at 2:05 p.m. CT. At least Danks is scheduled to make that start, with a high chance of rain forecast for the Glendale area. Danks will probably throw a side session if there's an issue with the game. Adam Dunn, who is scheduled to make the journey to the Academy Awards on Sunday, is slated to make his Cactus League debut Saturday as well.
