Young real jack-of-all-trades against Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- In many ways, right-hander Chris Young is a manager's dream: Young simply goes about his work professionally, and almost always gets the job done.

And on Tuesday night in the Royals' 7-2 win over Milwaukee, Young got it done on the mound and at the plate.

Young, who threw 6 1/3 shutout innings his previous time out, fired seven shutout innings on Tuesday, giving up just five hits, walking none and striking out three. As a bonus, he had two hits and three RBIs, and became the first Royals pitcher to collect three RBIs since Steve Busby in 1972.

"It's really enjoyable watching him," manager Ned Yost said. "And it really starts before the game with his preparation. You know what you're going to get -- he's going to execute his pitches, execute his game plan. There's just a lot of confidence when he's out there."

Young lowered his ERA to 1.98 and now is 6-2. He should be a serious candidate for the All-Star team. How does Young do it?

"It's that mystical deception," Yost said. "We couldn't hit him [last year]. I could never figure out how we couldn't hit him. Now we see him up close and no one else can hit him."

While Young got two hits, he also was upset that he didn't get a sacrifice bunt executed his first time up.

"As a starting pitcher, I played in the National League and understand what I have to do," Young said. "Any base hit is a bonus. I expect to get the bunt down. I really didn't do that. Didn't execute that.

"On the other hand, you get lucky and you run into a couple [hits] sometimes."

And what was working on the mound for Young?

"The last two times the fastball command was there," he said. "That really helps. You go through periods where you are locked in. I was."
