Yelich run-saving grab ends inning; Braves keep running

ATLANTA -- Christian Yelich may have lost his hat on the play, but the Marlins left fielder definitely didn't lose possession of his highlight catch.

The standout defensive play saved a couple of runs, and created some confusion in the second inning in Miami's 3-2 loss to Atlanta on Monday at Turner Field.

With runners on first and second and two outs, Cameron Maybin ripped a liner off Mat Latos that appeared to be headed for extra bases. Yelich, however, had other ideas. He darted backward and made a sensational grab.

"It kind of happened really fast," Yelich said. "At first I thought it was over my head. I got a good jump on it. I kind of lept at the last second, caught it and rolled. I knew I caught it the whole time."

In the process of tumbling to the ground, his hat fell off, which seemed to confuse the Braves and third-base coach Bo Porter, who kept waving home the runners. Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged the call, and replay quickly confirmed the catch.

"I looked and saw everybody was still running, and they were challenging it," Yelich said. "I don't know why. A couple of our guys said, 'They guessed my hat came off, and they saw the white on it and thought it was the ball.'"

Yelich, the 2014 National League Gold Glove Award-winning left fielder, showed why he is so highly regarded in the field. But while he saved a couple of runs, the 23-year-old downplayed the catch because of how the game turned out.

"It ended up not mattering because we didn't win the game," Yelich said.
