Wilson sharp, backed by bats before Angels fall

TEMPE, Ariz. -- A three-run eighth pushed the Mariners ahead, and a four-run ninth sealed the win as Seattle rallied past the Angels, 10-6, on Tuesday at Tempe Diablo Stadium. 

The eighth-inning rally was aided, in part, by a missed opportunity for the Angels on what looked like a tailor-made double-play ball with the bases loaded and one out in the inning. Instead of yielding two outs, the grounder actually yielded none after Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon initiated a replay review that confirmed that Halos second baseman Andrew Romine didn't have control of the throw he took at second before dropping the ball attempting to get the forceout before making the turn. 

The first run of the inning to scored on the play, and after the Mariners tied it with a bases-loaded walk, the go-ahead run scored when pinch-hitter Mike Dowd was hit by a Yoslan Herrera pitch with the bases loaded.

C.J. Wilson gave up one unearned run in five innings for the Angels in his third start of the spring. Wilson gave up four hits, walked none and struck out four, five days after throwing four hitless innings against the Dodgers, to put his spring ERA at 2.45.

Scott Baker, a non-roster invitee who's fighting for a rotation spot with the Mariners, gave up five runs (two earned) in three innings, and at one point plunked three straight batters -- Albert Pujols, David Freese and Howie Kendrick.

Matt Long -- 4-for-5 and a homer shy of the cycle on Monday -- put the Angels on the board with an RBI single in the second, and Mike Trout and Pujols followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles. In the third, Erick Aybar brought in a run with a fielder's-choice groundout, and Long made it a 5-1 game with an RBI double.

Kendrick singled and drew a walk to put his Cactus League batting average at .471, while Aybar -- not particularly known for his patience -- drew another walk to give him a team-leading seven. Freese started at designated hitter after missing three straight games with a blister in his foot, and went 0-for-2.

Mariners left fielder Dustin Ackley doubled for the fifth time this spring, and Robinson Cano went 1-for-2 to put his spring batting average at .588. Seattle added two runs in the sixth, when Kevin Jepsen started the inning with back-to-back walks to Chris Taylor and Cano, then gave up a two-out RBI single to Nick Franklin before making it a two-run game with a balk.

Up next: The Angels play their second of three spring split-squad games on Wednesday. At Tempe Diablo Stadium, in a game on MLB.TV, Hector Santiago will start against recent Brewers pickup Matt Garza, the 30-year-old right-hander who turned down a four-year, $52 million contract from the Angels in December. In Surprise, Ariz., Joe Blanton will start against Rangers righty Alexi Ogando. Blanton, without a role despite being owed $8.5 million, is in need of a solid outing after giving up seven runs and four homers in 3 1/3 innings five days ago. Both games start at 1:05 p.m. PT.
