Cleveland Indians named to Commission 50 for diversity, inclusion

Organization honored by Commission on Economic Inclusion for commitment to diverse work force, supplier base

The Cleveland Indians have been awarded the Best in Class for Workforce Diversity, Large Corporation, at the annual meeting of the Greater Cleveland Partnership.

Additionally, the Indians organization was recognized as a strong contender for Supplier Diversity recognition. Both awards were presented by the Commission on Economic Inclusion, a program of GCP.

According to GCP, members of the Commission 50 are recognized annually for progress in creating, enhancing and sustaining their diversity and inclusion strategies, based on responses to the Commission's annual Employers Survey on Diversity. Companies' scores are tabulated based on four metrics: board, senior management, work force and supplier diversity.

"The Cleveland Indians are proud of our organization's diverse work force and a supplier base that continues to grow more diverse," said Sara Lehrke, the Indians Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer. "In the Spirit of Larry Doby, we are honored to be recognized as Best in Class for Workforce Diversity and will continue to represent his legacy with our commitment to diversity."

The Indians organization is committed to developing and maintaining an environment that embraces diversity, and accomplishes that goal in a number of ways:

  • by attracting a diverse work force that brings a broad range of perspectives and experiences
  • by offering extensive training and education opportunities for current staff
  • by establishing the Indians Supplier Diversity program and participating MLB's supplier diversity initiatives
  • through the organization's Diversity Council, which serves as the organization's thought leaders in diversity

"The Commission is pleased to recognize the Cleveland Indians for their strong initiatives in workforce and supplier diversity. Their formalized efforts on both fronts have produced measurable results and reflect the organization's commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their business," said Deborah Bridwell, Deputy Executive Director, Commission on Economic Inclusion.
