Indians' Kipnis named AL Player of the Week

Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has been named American League Player of the Week for the second time in June.

The two awards this season have been the first two of his career, as he joins teammates Ryan Raburn and Justin Masterson as other Indians AL Players of the Week in 2013.

Kipnis hit .478 (11-for-23) last week with four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and nine runs scored over seven games. He hit safely in each of them.

Kipnis led the Majors in walks and on-base percentage (.606), was tied for first in RBIs and doubles, and was second in runs. He also tied for the league lead in hits, was second in batting average and total bases, and was third in slugging percentage (1.043).

Kipnis hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game and then went on to score twice in the ninth inning of Cleveland's 4-3 win in Baltimore. The Illinois native then went 4-for-7 with five runs, three doubles, four walks and four RBIs in a Friday doubleheader against the White Sox.

He is already two home runs shy of his career-high of 14, set last year. Kipnis is also riding a season-best 12-game hitting streak, going 20-for-40 (.500) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs, 17 RBIs and 10 runs over that stretch. He's reached safely in 32 consecutive games, the Indians' longest streak since Ryan Garko also reached in 32 straight in 2008.

Overall, Kipnis hit .419 (39-for-93) in the month of June.
