College outfielder Heyman goes in eighth round

The D-backs' eighth-round pick (No. 240 overall) in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft is from the same junior college that Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper played for in 2010.

Grant Heyman is a 20-year-old outfielder who was named as the 2014 Scenic West Conference Player of the Year.

Heyman hit .377 with 24 doubles, eight homers and 43 RBIs for the College of Southern Nevada this season. He was 12-for-12 in the stolen base department.

Those offensive numbers mean a little more to scouts given that the league Southern Nevada is in uses wood as opposed to aluminum bats.

"He certainly has raw power," D-backs scouting director Ray Montgomery said of Heyman, who was scouted by Doyle Wilson. "One attractive quality for us is that he's been swinging the wood all season. So he has the ability to swing the wood bat, which we like."

Heyman was initially selected by the Blue Jays in the 11th round of the 2012 Draft, but elected instead to go to Miami. After one season with the Hurricanes, though, he transferred to Southern Nevada.

"It's been a good experience," Heyman said in a recent interview. "In high school I was a three-sport guy. It's only the last few years that I played just baseball. I'm not as raw anymore. I feel my raw talent has turned into refined talent."
