McHugh is Astros-record good-luck charm

ANAHEIM -- When the eighth inning rolled around Thursday night and the only run that had scored came on a homer in the first inning by Mike Trout, Astros pitcher Collin McHugh began coming to terms with the fact the homer might have did him in.

"I was thinking the whole time, 'Don't ever tell me solo homers don't beat you,' because it looked like it for a while," he said.

McHugh gave up another run in the eighth before the Astros rallied for three in the ninth off Angels closer Huston Street to get him off the hook and send Houston to its seventh consecutive win on the road, 3-2, over the Angels.

"That was super exciting," McHugh said. "This team's been doing this all year and grinding it out and playing full nine innings, and it pays off on a night like tonight."

McHugh held the Angels to two runs on five hits while striking out seven batters in 7 1/3 innings. He took a no-decision, but the Astros have won 11 consecutive games in which he's started, a franchise record. McHugh is 9-0 with a 2.54 ERA during the stretch.

"He was in cruise control for a lot of the game," manager A.J. Hinch said.

McHugh allowed the one-out homer to Trout in the first and had faced one over the minimum through six innings. He gave up a pair of singles in that span, but both runners were erased on double plays.

"We did a pretty good job of being as efficient as we could be," McHugh said. "You like to be able to finish out that inning [in the eighth] and not worry about it, not give up one more. But they put a couple of swings on it and that's what happens. Overall, we had a good game plan and executed it pretty well for the most part."
