Gillaspie leads productive day for South Siders

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The White Sox scored 12 runs in three innings off Rangers relievers Cody Buckel, Evan Meek and Josh Lindblom and went on to a 14-8 victory on Tuesday at Surprise Stadium.

Third baseman Conor Gillaspie led the White Sox with two hits and four RBIs, and the South Siders took advantage of five walks by Buckel in the third inning. Catcher Hector Gimenez also had two hits. White Sox starter Nestor Molina and reliever Brian Omogrosso both pitched two scoreless innings.

Rangers starter Yu Darvish retired six straight hitters to begin the game, striking out two, before Buckel took over in the third.

"I think my fastball was really good today, but it's just the beginning of Spring Training," Darvish said. "I don't think the hitters are ready yet."

Mike Olt delivered his first hit of the spring with a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the Rangers. He is now 1-for-8 in the Cactus League.

Up next: Simon Castro, who came to the White Sox as part of the Carlos Quentin trade with the Padres, will take the mound against Texas at Camelback Ranch at 2:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday. Much like Molina's injury issues in 2012, Castro had problems in his right forearm that contributed to a sub-par showing. Donnie Veal also will be on the mound, while Matt Thornton throws live batting practice in the morning.
