Cubs activate outfielder Ryan Sweeney, place Emilio Bonifacio on 15-day DL

PHILADELPHIA - The Chicago Cubs today activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right rib cage inflammation.

Sweeney, who wears uniform No. 6, is available for tonight's game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Sweeney, 29, landed on the disabled list, May 3, with a right hamstring strain suffered the previous day vs. St. Louis. He is batting .200 (11-for-55) with two doubles and six RBI in 20 games for Chicago this season. The left-handed batter hit .286 (6-for-21) with three RBI in seven games prior to landing on the disabled list. Sweeney played in two injury rehabilitation games with Single-A Kane County, June 9-11, going hitless with a walk in six plate appearances.

In all or part of nine major league seasons with the White Sox (2006-07), Athletics (2008-11), Red Sox (2012) and Cubs (2013-14), Sweeney owns a .276 batting average (543-for-1,966) with 117 doubles, 14 triples, 20 home runs and 210 RBI in 625 games. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs, April 3, 2013, after he was released by the Red Sox near the end of Spring Training that year.

Bonifacio, 29, is hitting .266 (64-for-241) with 10 doubles, three triples, one home run, 16 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 61 games for Chicago this season. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs on February 15 of this year.
