Cubs-Cards game postponed due to inclement weather

CHICAGO -- With forecasts calling for rain and sub-freezing wind chills throughout the rest of the day, the Cubs opted to postpone Tuesday's scheduled 7:05 p.m. CT game against the Cardinals. A makeup date for the game will be announced later.

The day off will be the third in four days for the Cardinals, who opened the season with a 3-0 victory over the Cubs on Sunday. That game was preceded by a day off in Chicago, and the Cards had another on Monday, while the other 28 Major League clubs played their season openers. Another off-day awaits the team in Cincinnati on Thursday.

The Cardinals did hold a one-hour workout on Monday, and several players still showed up on Tuesday to get in a light workout. But with the tarp covering the field and the batting cages inaccessible, the Cardinals had little opportunity for much baseball activity. A few pitchers played catch on the outfield grass; other players spent time in the workout room and/or training room.

"I figured it would be cold and nasty but we'd play," said manager Mike Matheny, when asked if he expected weather issues opening the season in Chicago. "It didn't work out that way. It was nice we had that workout yesterday. When you're at this point in the season, you just want to play."

Right-hander Lance Lynn, who was scheduled to start on Tuesday, will now pitch in Wednesday's series finale. Though both clubs have a mutual off-day on Thursday, the Cardinals did not expect the postponed game to be made up then. The Cardinals will make another three trips to Chicago this season, with two more road series against the Cubs and another against the White Sox.
