Cubs select RHP Kyle Hendricks from Triple-A Iowa, option RHP Dallas Beeler to Iowa

CINCINNATI - The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Dallas Beeler has been optioned to Iowa.

Hendricks, who wears uniform number 28, today makes his major league debut in a start against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Hendricks, 24, is 10-5 with a 3.59 ERA (41 ER/102.2 IP) in 17 starts for Iowa this season, and has been named a Pacific Coast League mid-season All-Star. His 10 wins rank tied for first among the league's pitchers while his 97 strikeouts rank fifth and his 3.59 ERA ranks 10th. Hendricks has walked just 23 batters, good for an average of just 2.0 walks per 9.0 innings compared to 8.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

The six-foot, three-inch, 190-pound Hendricks was named the 2013 Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the organization after going 13-4 with a complete game shutout and a 2.00 ERA (37 ER/166.1 IP) between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa. He combined to strike out 128 batters and walk just 34 in 166.1 innings, good for a 3.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Hendricks was named a 2013 Southern League mid-season All-Star and claimed the league ERA title with a 1.85 ERA (26 ER/126.1 IP) in 21 starts for the Smokies.

Acquired from Texas at the 2012 trade deadline with infielder Christian Villanueva for pitcher Ryan Dempster, Hendricks is 31-19 with a 2.69 ERA (135 ER/452.1 IP) with three complete games and one shutout in 90 career minor league games (69 starts). He was originally selected by Texas in the eighth round of the 2011 Draft. 

Hendricks earned his degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., this past fall. He graduated from Capistrano Valley (Calif.) High School in 2008.

Beeler, 25, has posted a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11.0 IP) in two starts for the Cubs this season. He is 5-3 with a 3.93 ERA (29 ER/66.1 IP) in 11 starts for Iowa.
