Olt scratched as wrist continues to heal

CHICAGO -- Cubs third baseman Mike Olt was scratched from Monday's game to give him one more day to heal his right wrist, which was hit by a pitch on Saturday by the Rockies' Adam Ottavino.

Olt was able to pinch-hit on Sunday, and stayed in the game at third base for one inning. He did not handle a ground ball. He was scheduled to bat sixth, but Olt exited batting practice early to receive treatment.

• Manager Joe Maddon is trying to share at-bats between the team's three catchers, Miguel Montero, David Ross and Welington Castillo.

"It's a balancing act," Maddon said. "I know, from their perspective, they'd like to be playing more often. I want them to feel that way. But I've been honest in telling them what's going on."

Maddon said he'll try to get Castillo starts against left-handed pitchers, and also can use him as a pinch-hitter. Castillo has been taking grounders at third base in case he's needed in an emergency. The Cubs were playing short-handed on Monday with both Olt and Tommy La Stella sidelined with injuries.

• James Russell, who the Cubs signed to a Minor League deal last week, will join Triple-A Iowa on Monday in New Orleans, where the Minor League team was to open a four-game series. The Cubs selected Russell in the 14th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, and he pitched for the team until dealt to the Braves last July. Atlanta released him on March 29.

• Justin Grimm, on the disabled list with a strained right forearm, has yet to resume throwing. Grimm was in Arizona at the Cubs complex to rehab, and there was no timetable for his return.

• Tsuyoshi Wada, who was on the disabled list with a groin injury, threw 72 pitches over five innings on Sunday, and could start for one of the Cubs' Minor League affiliates next. Dallas Beeler, also on the disabled list, was to throw about 60 pitches midweek in Arizona, where he is rehabbing.
