D-backs acquire Matt Reynolds from Rockies

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks (@dbacks) announced that they have acquired left-handed reliever Matt Reynolds from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for infielder Ryan Wheeler. The announcement was made by D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.
 
“We are excited to add a versatile and experienced left-handed reliever to the bullpen,” said Towers. “He’s very familiar with our division and has been a workhorse for the last couple seasons, so we expect he can continue to do that for us.”
 
Reynolds, 28, has appeared in 165 games for the Rockies over the past three seasons, posting a 5-3 record and 3.93 ERA. He has been equally as effective against left-handers as he has right-handers, holding lefties to a .262 average, .309 OBP and .459 slugging percentage compared to .259/.323/.506 against right-handers.
 
Playing his home games in hitter-friendly Coors Field, Reynolds has posted a 4.34 ERA in the Mile High City compared to a 3.33 mark in all other ballparks.
 
Last season, Reynolds appeared in 71 games, posting ERAs of 2.25 in April, 2.93 in June and 2.25 in September.
 
Over the past two seasons, Reynolds ranks 13th in baseball with 144 appearances and tied for 3rd in games pitched by a left-hander. The only southpaws to see more action from 2011-12 were Sean Marshall and Jonny Venters (151 games each).
 
Wheeler, 24, made his big league debut last season, appearing in 50 games for the D-backs while batting .239 with 1 homer and 10 RBI. He played 23 games at third base and four games at first base, committing 2 errors in 49 total chances. The Torrance, Calif. native also appeared in 93 games for Triple-A Reno where he batted .351 with 15 homers and 90 RBI.
