Bullpen does heavy lifting in comeback win

CINCINNATI -- D-backs starting pitcher Patrick Corbin didn't have his best stuff on Thursday night, but the bullpen was there to pick him up in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Reds.

Corbin was only able to go two innings, but seven scoreless innings from the bullpen led to the comeback victory at Great American Ball Park. Five different relievers worked together to hold the Reds to just two hits and one walk as Arizona recovered from an early four-run deficit.

"Luckily we were able to keep the damage to only four runs early on, and were able to put some zeros up there and give our offense enough time to come back," right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson said.

David Hernandez picked up the victory after throwing a perfect seventh inning, and Brad Ziegler picked up the save in the ninth after retiring the side. But it was Josh Collmenter who may have been the most impressive. Collmenter entered the game in the third inning and retired all nine batters he faced to help kickstart the comeback. Collmenter has pitched seven perfect innings against the Reds dating back to May 29, 2014.

"Good to get [Corbin] out of there, Collmenter picked us up huge and just guys competing. We talk about that in the [pregame] meetings," D-backs manager Chip Hale said.

Hudson also received praise from Hale for working out of a jam in the eighth. Hudson gave up a leadoff single to Eugenio Suarez and walked Joey Votto to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, he was able to retire the next three hitters to protect a one-run lead.

Hudson needed some strong defensive help on the final out of the eighth as shortstop Chris Owings robbed Ivan De Jesus. of a hit that could of scored the runner from second base. He acknowledged he has gotten some help lately from the guys behind him and was thankful for Owings' strong defensive play.

"I've been having a lot of those lately," Hudson jokingly said about the stressful eighth inning. "Just getting myself in trouble, making some mistakes with two strikes and not being able to put guys away, but thankfully I got good defense. Especially in Pittsburgh, guys, [Paul Goldschmidt] making that play off [Andrew] McCutchen's bat and [Owings] making that great play in the hole. So tip my hat to those guys and hopefully I can get a 1-2-3 inning next time."
