Outfield rotation paying off for D-backs

Pollock, Peralta, Tomas and Inciarte capitalize on chances

PHOENIX -- No player wants to see his name out of the starting lineup. But for the four starting-caliber outfielders on the D-backs' roster, one of them has to see their name listed among the reserves before every game.

A.J. Pollock, David Peralta, Yasmany Tomas and Ender Inciarte have all shown they can contribute and help the club win.

When Tomas was struggling a bit offensively, manager Chip Hale was able to give him three straight games off over the weekend against the Reds. He returned Monday night and homered and drove in a pair of runs in a win over the Phillies.

Even though one of these four outfielders has to be limited to pinch-hit duties every game, Hale said he sees it as a positive.

"It is a good situation, it creates competition in a way," Hale said. "It creates the ability to keep everyone fresh."

That may be the most beneficial to Tomas, who is in his first season in the Majors after playing much shorter seasons in Cuba. Despite that, the 24-year-old says the longer season isn't wearing on him.

"I'm not tired at all," Tomas said through an interpreter. "I feel like the season started today."

The other three outfielders haven't shown signs of fatigue, either, if their play is any indication. Peralta had a career day Sunday when he went 5-for-5 and followed that up with three more hits Monday. Pollock continues to hit well in his first All-Star season, while Inciarte has multiple hits in 10 of the past 21 games he's started.

Pollock led the foursome with 109 games, including Tuesday's start, while Peralta has played in 103, Tomas 90 and Inciarte 87. Pollock also is the only one who starts nearly every day and goes longer periods without a day off.

"They're all four everyday guys," Hale said.
