Goldschmidt, Pollock win Gold Glove Awards

PHOENIX -- D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and center fielder A.J. Pollock have each won Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

It was the second Gold Glove Award for Goldschmidt and the first for Pollock.

Goldschmidt beat out San Francisco's Brandon Belt and the Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez, while Pollock bested Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen and the Reds' Billy Hamilton.

Pollock tied for fourth among all center fielders in baseball with 14 defensive runs saved.

"I always put a lot of emphasis on my defense and it's the ultimate award for defense so it was awesome to get the news," Pollock said.

Goldschmidt, who was also named as an NL Most Valuable Player finalist Tuesday, won his first Gold Glove in 2013.

"Since Day One his work ethic at first base is unmatched," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Goldschmidt last month. "He tries to get better on a daily basis whether it's improving his range, knowing the hitters, he's just a really selfless guy. There were a couple of times there were balls that got by him that the official scorer gave hits on and he was petitioning that they should be errors. So he wants to be better every day and he works at it."

Seventy-five percent of the vote comes from managers and coaches, while 25 percent comes from statistical analysis in collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

This past season, Goldschmidt led all first basemen with 18 defensive runs saved.

Hale made defense a point of emphasis during the spring and it paid off as the team led the NL in defensive runs saved with 71.

"I think you can go around the whole team and anyone is capable of winning this award and I think that's the amazing thing about our team," Pollock said. "I think it's just the culture we created here. Everyone buys into the fact that defense is one of the most important things you can do. That starts with Chip. In Spring Training he was the one emphasizing that and I have to give credit to Dave McKay, our outfield coach, too. I've learned so much from him."
