D-backs shooting for 'One62 Plus' this season

Idea for sweatshirt design becomes new mantra as club hones in on goals

PHOENIX -- When Major League Baseball approached the D-backs this year about coming up with a slogan to put on a team-branded sweatshirt, manager Chip Hale texted some of his core players with what the organization had come up with to get their thoughts.

"They kind of took it and ran with it," Hale said. "It was pretty cool. They came up with their own list."

"We just wanted to keep it simple," outfielder A.J. Pollock said. "You don't want to have an essay on your sweatshirt."

Tops on the player's list -- and the one that was ultimately selected: One62 Plus.

"You always talk about playing every pitch, every inning, every game -- and when you get to the end of the year, it's 162 games," first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said. "But everyone's goal is to win the World Series. So you don't just want to play 162, you want to play more games. That's where the plus came in. Not that you're looking ahead to anything, but just as a reminder what the team goal is, which is to get into the playoffs, where it's almost like a new season starts."

The team will wear the sweatshirts during the 2015 season.

"It kind of incorporates everything," Pollock said. "We're working towards playing meaningful games at the end of the year. It's definitely attainable."

Some analysts might dispute that, judging by the preseason predictions that had the D-backs picked to finish near the bottom of the National League West. The slogan is a statement by the players that they believe in themselves.

"If we don't believe, then we've got no chance," Pollock said. "You hear a lot of noise, a lot of people saying what your team is and what it is not, but there's numerous stories of teams that surprise people. You get some things to work out and you never know. That's what we're shooting for."

Once the D-backs' front office saw what the players came up with, they took the concept and decided to use it as well.

Look around downtown Phoenix near the ballpark and you'll see banners with One62 Plus, followed by words like "Power" or "Passion."

"When we heard about the concept of One62 Plus from the clubhouse, it seemed like a natural fit to extend beyond what happens on the field," said D-backs president/CEO Derrick Hall. "The 'plus' can mean so much more -- from our fans, to the pool, or even the new dining experience at Chase Field. And rather than make it a full-blown campaign, we are excited to see how our fans take the concept that our players came up with and run with it on their own."
