Tomas confident power will come

PHOENIX -- D-backs slugger Yasmany Tomas knows what you are thinking.

He's fully aware that he signed a six-year, $68.5 million deal last winter, in large part because of his raw power and ability to hit home runs, so you don't have to remind him.

Go ahead and ask because he knows it's coming.

"The question that everyone in the world, even my teammates, asks me is, 'Tomas, when are you going to hit a home run?'" Tomas said in Spanish. "I just say everything comes in its own time. When it's time for the balls to go over the fence, they will go over the fence. My focus is to make good contact and drive the ball. The home runs will come."

Tomas has 16 hits in his first 53 at-bats and he has driven in seven runs. His two extra-base hits have been doubles. He's also struck out nine times.

"Sometimes, that gets too much in his mind or in any player's mind that comes up and people expect him to hit [home runs]," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "He's making solid contact and he's hitting the ball all over the field. The home runs will come with him eventually. Sometimes, players can be a little harsh on that stuff. We just have to keep him focused on what he does best right now."

Tomas, who said he is most comfortable driving the ball to center field and right field, has played in 18 of the club's 28 games this season. He was not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Padres.

"I don't know if the physical off that's better for him or the mental part of it," Hale said. "He seems good. He's been working extremely hard. Every day, on the third-base side of it, it looks like he is getting better and better."
