D-backs to monitor Godley in Wednesday start

Club to make sure fatigue not issue for Friday's struggles; Hellickson to be activated, evaluated

CHICAGO -- The D-backs will give Zack Godley at least one more start, with the right-hander getting the ball Wednesday night against the Giants at Chase Field.

The original plan was to have Godley start this past Friday against the Cubs and make the start against the Giants before moving him to the bullpen for the rest of the season to limit his innings.

However, after Godley allowed six runs and walked six in 3 2/3 innings against the Cubs, D-backs manager Chip Hale said he wanted to speak with Godley as well as pitching coach Mike Harkey to make sure that fatigue was not a factor in his struggles.

"We're writing his last start on Friday off as maybe being a little overamped," Hale said referring to the fact that Godley was pitching against his former organization at Wrigley Field. "Not being able to throw strikes. Six walks. That's not him. That hasn't been him. We're going to work with him on some things, Mike will work with him on some mechanical stuff -- maybe he was a little bit rushed in his delivery. I'd like to get him at least this next start, at least at home, against the Giants and see how he bounces back."

Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, who has been on the DL with a strained left hamstring, is scheduled to make a rehab start for Triple-A Reno on Sunday. With the Minor League season coming to a close Monday, Hellickson will be activated and then evaluated by the team to see if he's healthy enough to get back in the rotation for the last few weeks of the season.

As they try to limit innings for Godley while taking it easy with Patrick Corbin as he comes back from Tommy John surgery, the D-backs could go to a six-man rotation, or simply mix and match the starters, down the stretch.
