Jennings awaits what's next with Marlins

PHILADELPHIA -- Whether Dan Jennings will continue to manage or move back into the front office has been the subject of speculation for months. Before any decisions are made, Jennings first anticipates meeting with upper management to decide his next step.

Jennings, who transitioned from general manager to manager on May 18, is focused on finishing out the season in the dugout. After that, he will see where he stands and what is determined to be in the best interest of the organization.

"From a standpoint of, if I'm asked to go back upstairs, then there are conversations that are going to have to take place," Jennings said on Saturday afternoon. "I want to understand where things are, because I've been removed for four-and-a-half months. So, there is catchup I have to be involved in, and conversations that have to take place, so that I'm up to speed with how things have evolved in the front office."

After playing a doubleheader at Philadelphia on Saturday, the Marlins will wrap up their year on Sunday.

As of now, Jennings hasn't been informed when he will discuss his future with management.

"I know, as we always do at the end of every year, we sit down and we have meetings and evaluations of staff members," Jennings said. "Myself would be in that, this time, because I'm the manager. That date has not been set, or it hasn't been told to me. I fully expect it to be the same that it is every year."

Jennings, under contract through 2018, was named general manager on the final day of the '13 season, and was asked to replace Mike Redmond as manager on May 17.

The Marlins are winding down a frustrating and disappointing season, a campaign where the club underperformed but also dealt with an abundance of injuries to core players. Giancarlo Stanton (broken left hamate bone) has been out since June 26, and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria (left hamstring) has not played since Sept. 2.

Jose Fernandez missed a majority of the season as he returned from Tommy John surgery, and also spent time on the disabled list with a right biceps tendon strain.

Opening Day starter Henderson Alvarez made just four starts and underwent right shoulder surgery.

The Marlins have already interviewed candidates to manage, including Manny Acta and Bo Porter.

Jennings said after Sunday's game, he plans on returning to Miami, packing up and going back to his home in Alabama. Then he will see what is next.

"I want to have a conversation with the powers to be, and let's determine what's going to be in the best interest of the organization," Jennings said.
