Robertson, Snell's numbers rise for Biscuits
Rays No. 2 prospect goes 7-for-9 in twin bill; No. 9 extends scoreless streak to 43 innings
Improving one's batting average by nearly 40 points in one day usually doesn't happen at this point of the season. But that's what Rays No. 2 prospect Daniel Robertson did Tuesday in a doubleheader.
The Double-A Montgomery shortstop went 7-for-9 with a triple and five RBIs in two contests against Tennessee, and bumped his average from .261 to .298 in the process.
Robertson, 21, a Compensation A pick by Oakland in 2012, was traded to Tampa Bay in January, along with John Jaso and Boog Powell. He's responded with three home runs and 25 RBIs for his new organization.
In Tuesday's second game, Rays No. 9 prospect Blake Snell extended his shutout streak to 40 innings with a seven-inning, two-hit night. He also ended last season with three scoreless innings, which means his shutout streak stands at 43 innings including last season's results. The Biscuits won the second game of the doubleheader, 14-0, after dropping the first game to the Smokies, 7-6.
Snell, a southpaw, opened the year with Class A Advanced Charlotte, where he tossed four scoreless starts. He was promoted to Montgomery in time for a May 1 start, and has given up just six hits in 19 innings in his three Double-A contests.
Combined, Snell has gone 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA on the season.
