Hernandez activated from DL; Leone optioned

PHOENIX -- The D-backs optioned reliever Dominic Leone to Double-A Mobile after Saturday's game to make room on the 25-man roster for reliever David Hernandez, who was activated from the disabled list on Sunday.

Hernandez made his first appearance in the 6-2 loss to the Mets since Sept. 29, 2013 when he came on to open the eighth inning after missing all of the 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery. The right-hander walked Lucas Duda before recording three straight outs, including a strikeout of Juan Lagares to end the inning.

"The game was tight still and we needed three outs and he got them for us," Hale said. "Definitely good to see, I could see a big exhale when he came off and relieved."

Before Sunday, Hernandez was 12-12 with a 3.42 ERA in three previous seasons as a reliever for the D-backs.

Leone was acquired from the Mariners on Wednesday and made one apperance for the D-backs since then. He gave up three runs in an inning against the Mets on Thursday. He is 0-5 with an 8.03 ERA in 11 appearances this season.

Last season, Leone was efficient for the Mariners in his rookie campaign, going 8-2 with a 2.17 ERA in 57 games.
