Papi sits out with respiratory infection
Red Sox slugger sent home before Sunday's game
BOSTON -- The Red Sox had hoped to get David Ortiz the start at first base in the final game before the All-Star break, but the slugger was instead out due to an upper respiratory infection.
In fact, Ortiz was sent home by the team's medical staff before Sunday's game, which the Yankees won, 8-6, at Fenway Park.
"David was sent home before the game and was not available in any capacity today," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "This came on throughout the game [Saturday] night. Was checked here this morning and doctors' instructions was to leave the ballpark."
The Red Sox waited until roughly 90 minutes before game time to post the lineup, hoping that pumping some fluids into Ortiz would enable him to play.
But the lineup that Farrell posted had Travis Shaw at first base and Hanley Ramirez at designated hitter.
Alejandro De Aza played left field and Shane Victorino got the nod in right field.
Farrell hopes Ortiz will be better by Friday, when the Red Sox open a seven-game road trip in Anaheim.
