Phelps thrilled to win start against former club
Righty delivers 7 solid innings as Marlins throttle Yankees
MIAMI -- Marlins starter David Phelps admitted he knows he'll sleep well Tuesday night. And it's for good reason.
In Miami's 12-2 win against the Yankees at Marlins Park, Phelps (4-3, 3.96 ERA) went seven innings and allowed just two runs against the club that traded him away in December. On 108 pitches, the 28-year-old surrendered just two hits and struck out five as he defeated the Yankees, whom he was with from 2012-14.

"It is a business, but at the same time, it's a good feeling," Phelps said. "I'll wake up tomorrow and I'll be pretty happy. For me it was just cool going out there and pitching against some of those guys I played with for a while."
In three seasons with New York, Phelps went 15-14 with a 4.21 ERA as he mainly pitched out of the bullpen. Now with the Marlins, he's recorded two straight terrific outings -- tossing a career-high eight scoreless innings on Thursday before notching his second straight win Tuesday.
"Phelps executed pitch after pitch and did a great job of getting it in and letting these guys continue to swing it," manager Dan Jennings said. "[For the offense] to put up an eight-spot [in the first inning], he could be a little more free with what he wanted to throw and how he wanted to attack that lineup, and he certainly did. Tremendous effort by him. That's a good hitting ballclub."
Phelps said: "The biggest thing for me was going out in the second inning and putting up a zero."
He also pointed out a nostalgic moment that came from his Yankees days.
"I played with [Mason Williams] there in the Minor Leagues, and he hit a double [in the seventh]," Phelps said. "I was walking off the field and just smiling at him. If it's anybody else on any other team, I'm pretty upset. But I have a lot of good friends over there."
