Holland pitches deep, provides sole offense in loss

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Jesus Guzman hit a two-run home run and Jason Marquis allowed one run over six-plus innings Monday as the Padres defeated the Rangers, 3-1, in a Cactus League game at the Peoria Sports Complex.

Marquis, the projected No. 3 starter in the Padres rotation, allowed six hits and had four walks and five strikeouts. He started the seventh inning and allowed a hit before leaving after 91 pitches.

Marquis helped himself offensively, too. He started the fifth inning with a single and scored when Chris Denorfia doubled to the wall in center field.

Texas starting pitcher Derek Holland, who entered the game with a 1.29 ERA, allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Holland will be the Rangers' No. 4 starter in the rotation.

"I feel good. Everything is fine," Holland said. "I feel strong and I got my pitch count up. I feel ready to go."

Texas leadoff hitter Elvis Andrus extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a double in the second inning. Andrus added a single in the seventh inning. He is now hitting .463 (19-for-41) during the streak.

Holland, batting for the first time this spring, knocked in a run with an RBI single in the second inning. His hit was preceded by a double by Leury Garcia.

Up next: Left-hander Matt Harrison makes his final start of the spring at 3:05 p.m. CT Tuesday against the White Sox in Surprise, Ariz. Harrison is scheduled to pitch four innings and then start for the Rangers on Opening Night against the Astros. Derek Lowe is also scheduled to pitch two innings.
