Jeter's elbow sore, but not a concern
Shortstop likely to receive routine days off through end of season
BALTIMORE -- Derek Jeter reported no issues with his sore left elbow after the second game of Friday's day-night doubleheader, a 5-0 Yankees loss, so New York manager Joe Girardi is ready to proceed as normal for the rest of the captain's final voyage.
"I would think he probably feels a little bit better," Girardi said of Jeter, who was drilled by a 94-mph fastball from the Rays' Brad Boxberger in Thursday's 5-4 victory in the Bronx.
Jeter sat out the first game of Friday's day-night doubleheader against the Orioles, a 2-1 loss in 11 innings, but played in the nightcap, going 0-for-4 as the shortstop.
The Yankees will have 15 regular-season games remaining after Saturday's contest in Baltimore, and even though this could be Jeter's final sprint to the finish line, Girardi said that he will have to rest the 40-year-old in some of those contests.
"I know I can't [play Jeter every day]," Girardi said. "It would be silly to do that, so I'm going to have to give him a day here and there."
