Dodgers add righty prospect Baez, option Fife

WASHINGTON -- The Dodgers recalled pitcher Pedro Baez from Double-A Chattanooga and optioned another pitcher, Stephen Fife, back to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday before the start of the series with Washington.

Baez, ranked No. 10 among the team's top prospects, is a right-hander who's on the Dodgers' active roster for the first time and made his debut in the team's 4-0 loss to the Nationals. He allowed a single and a two-run homer to Danny Espinosa to open the eighth inning, but then retired the next three, including a pair of strikeouts.

Baez had a 1-0 record for Chattanooga with five saves and a 2.84 ERA. The 26-year old is a converted infielder. The question for Baez is how long he might be with the team because Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to come off the disabled list to start Tuesday's game in Washington.

Kershaw's been on the DL (teres major strain) since March 30. He earned the Opening Day win over Arizona in Australia on March 22, giving up one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Dodgers scored a 3-1 victory.
