Haren to start Game 1 of twin bill

MINNEAPOLIS -- Dan Haren will start the first game of Thursday's split doubleheader for the Dodgers, manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday, and a callup from Triple-A Albuquerque will pitch the second game, but he wouldn't confirm it will be Red Patterson.

The Dodgers are allowed to add a 26th player for the doubleheader. Patterson was scratched from Tuesday night's start for Albuquerque, so he is the most likely spot starter. He would need to be added to the 40-man roster, with someone else being moved off.

"It doesn't cost anything to use the 26th man," Mattingly said.

Because of the doubleheader, the Dodgers would need to add a starting pitcher by Sunday to avoid bringing back Wednesday night's starter, Zack Greinke, on short rest.

With a callup to follow Haren on Thursday, Josh Beckett would likely start in Miami against his former team on Friday, followed by Paul Maholm on Saturday and Hyun-Jin Ryu on Sunday. Each would be starting on two extra days of rest.
